Chronic Diseases

Chronic Diseases Lesson Plans

This is a website where schools are promoting health. There is a table with a list of the different chronic diseases and the various outcomes. Next to each of the diseases is a space for a lesson plan for specific age groups. Not every disease has a lesson for every age group. When you click on the lesson you want it takes you to a page where there are more than one lesson for that age group and topic (again varying on the topic). These are all lessons sponsored by different sites and informational sites. (ex. Skin Cancer Homepage at the National Cancer Institute Website).

Fight Chronic Diseases

This is a national website in hopes of finding a way to fight the different chronic diseases. This is a very informative website that not only defines what a chronic disease is but also provides many different forms of research on the disease. The site also defines the reason people are considering chronic diseases as a national healthcare crisis:

"Chronic diseases are creating a national health care crisis.

Chronic diseases - ongoing, generally incurable illnesses, such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes and heart disease - are the single greatest threat to our nation's health and to our health care system.

Below are six "unhealthy truths" about chronic disease in the United States:

Truth #1

Chronic diseases are the No. 1 cause of death and disability in the U.S.

Truth #2

Treating patients with chronic diseases accounts for 75 percent of the nation's health care spending.

Truth #3

Two-thirds of the increase in health care spending is due to increased prevalence of treated chronic disease.

Truth #4 The doubling of obesity between 1987 and today accounts for 20 to 30 percent of the rise in health care spending.
Truth #5 The vast majority of cases of chronic disease could be better prevented or managed.
Truth #6

Many Americans are unaware of the extent to which chronic diseases could be better prevented or managed"

Types of Teen Cancer

This site explains the different forms of cancer that a teen is most likely to get (if they even get cancer at all). The different forms of can cancer include: Osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcom, Leukemia, Brain tumors, Hodgkin's disease, and  Testicular cancer. Now some of these different cancers are not common in teens but a teen can contract the disease. This is an informative site for people who do not understand the different types of cancers and would like to know what they are. It is a site intended for teens so the reading level is fairly easy and can be used as a resource in a class. On the page are also links to other pages such as Cancer Basics and Dealing with Cancer

Juvenile Diabetes

This is the official website for juvenile diabetes. With the rising obesity throughout our country many children are starting to develop juvenile (or type 1) diabetes  at a young age. It is important that a teacher know about the disease and what to do to help a child in the classroom in case of a problem. This can be as simple as having some little snack around, or a juice box just in case a student starts complaining of low blood sugar.

Students with Asthma

This is an education journal about supporting students who have Asthma. There are over five million children suffering from Asthma and the number is steadily increasing. "This digest briefly describes asthma symptoms and "triggers." It also presents some suggestions for maintaining a school environment conducive to the attendance of children with asthma and for developing a curriculum conducive to their academic achievement." This is a good resource for teachers to have so that they can understand the symptoms of asthma and what triggers an attack. It is important that a teacher know all that he/she can about something that may happen in class/school one day.
